Our trip to Satu-Nou (Romania) (Mick Smith, Lorraine Smith, Brooke Smith, Micah Powell)Our connection with Romania started over 30yrs ago when we were first introduced to the Andronic family, the family lived in a city in the north east of Romania called Bacau, Mircea & Felicia Andronic had 7 children, Daniel, Daniela, Cornel, Cornelia, Simon, Simona & Marcel.
They were members of the local Baptist church, we would visit them quite regularly in fact I would go to Romania 2 maybe 3 times a year.
Mircea Andronic was a pastor and a missionary, I would go with him to the churches he had planted across the surrounding area. one of these church plants was in a farmers house in a village called Calin which grew in to the Baptist church in the village of Satu-Nou.
Unfortunately Mircea & Felicia have passed on and the children have grown and are spread across the world but Simon Andronic became the pastor of the church in Satu-Nou the very church his father planted many years before.
Simon lives in Satu – Nou with his wife Oana where they lead the church and head up numerous ministries covering all ages. The village is very poor –
A lot of the houses are still made the old fashioned way with bricks made of clay and cow dung with branches going through them to hold them together. they still have to fetch water from a well which in some cases is over a quarter of a mile away from the house
Simon did tell of a young boy who turned up at church drunk, for the men who can find a little work on the land within the village its not unusual for them to be paid in alchohol rather than money.
As well as the church in Satu – Nou there is a small house for Pastor Simon and Oana, and opposite the church is another house not quite finished yet that will be used for vunerable children from the village it is named Casa Andrei after the first boy who will live there. our aim is to help run the house for the children with Simon and Oana but that is not possible at the moment.
While we were in Satu-nou a Dentistry mission team came for a week and held a clinic in the village school, they had done this for the last 3 years it is open to all the surounding villages as well as Satu-Nou, when the team is finished it moves off to do another weeks mission in Moldova, the team is headed by Pastor Simon’s Brother in law Daniel and Simon’s sister Cornelia who live in America the clinic was full most days, children, adults, anyone was welcome, Brooke and Micah helped in the clinic by taking the blood pressure of the adults when they signed in, Lorraine also got involved helping the nurses making up free bags with tooth paste, tooth brushes, floss etc that were given out as they left , Lorraine mainly helped most days by cleaning and steralising the drills and various equipment they used for fillings, extractions etc.
Brooke and Micah also spent time with some girls from the village, playing games and doing their hair, they came most days especially when they knew that food was around. Because of where the village is it is very difficult for the children to get to a high school, they have to go to Bacau which is about a hour away, Simon has a program where he gets people to sponsor a child so the child can live at the school Mon to Fri in Bacau, he also arranges for them to have extra lessons because the primary school education in the villages leaves a lot to be desired, up to now he has 23 children from the villages who are on this program.
We have been visiting this village for many years and long may it continue, we pray that we can be a help in some way as God works out his plans through Simon & Oana in Sat-Nou Mick & Lorraine Smith
